When the DV‑8 was released in the early 1990s by the Aachen-based manufacturer Phoenix, it was—well—quirky. Today it’s an absolute rarity: a classic delta kite equipped with extra‑large flaps for quad‑line flying.
And it flies surprisingly well! Propeller spins aren’t really its thing, but crisp corners, deliberate stalls, and sudden stops just above the ground come as naturally as controlled backward flight.
So we decided to bring the DV‑8 back—thanks to the kind permission of Tom Jeckel from Phoenix Airsports.
For 2026, the DV‑8 receives a constructive refresh: the entire design—shape, bridle, and more—has been modernized, and the flaps have been completely rethought. They’re smaller now, and thanks to multiple stand‑off tensions they snap back instantly when the brake lines are released. This allows the DV‑8 to axel cleanly, sit neatly in turtle and fade positions, and always recover reliably. Used correctly, the brake lines support demanding trick‑kite flying, and the flaps add an exciting new dimension on top of that.
